It’s been nearly a year since the unpleasant business at Hogwarts, and Draco’s getting on with his life quite nicely, thank you, until Harry sodding Potter steps in and ruins it all, just like always. At first, though, the time loop seems liberating. For the first time in his life, he can do anything, say anything, be anything, without consequence. But the more Draco repeats the day, the more he realises the uncomfortable truth: he’s falling head over heels for the speccy git. And suddenly, the time loop feels like a trap. For how can he ever get Harry to love him back when time is, quite literally, against him?

Animal transformation fics are different from traditional "creature" fics (such as veelas, vampires, and werewolves) as in the latter cases the character is usually considered not-quite-human. And even in their 'human' form they will have heightened senses or additional powers and such. No, here they are just temporarily transformed into an unremarkable animal, whether by choice or by curse.

As I was putting this list together I realized that this trope is most often used as part of an "Identity Unknown" type plot. In the fics recced below, it turns out it's always Harry who transforms into some sort of animal, and Draco who is temporarily clueless as to his true identity.

Now that I think about it, this is the opposite direction of deception as in my previous sets of Identity Unknown recs, where Harry is more often the clueless one. This may or may not be significant. Hmmm....

While the transformation is most often due to Harry's being an Animagus, sometimes it's caused by a curse instead. Either way, Draco isn't able to figure it out right away, which is part of the fun :)

Another all-time-favorite trope of mine is characters being forced to tell the truth. Awkward confessions and embarrassment FTW! In the world of HP, this is usually accomplished through the use of veritaserum, though sometimes we get unusual curses instead. It's all good :)

I've done so many 8th year fic recs this month, but I haven't yet recced one of my absolute favorite 8th year fics.

This one doesn't involve any magical bonds or creatures, it doesn't rely on party games or love potions or bets or almost any other standard trope other than their simply being roommates. And as much as I adore all of those other tropes, sometimes it's nice to see the boys figure things out organically, without anything or anyone forcing them to be together :)

I've seen rec requests for this trope before on other blogs, so I know people want to read these fics (and so do I!) The thing is, there aren't yet a whole lot of ABO fics written for the Harry/Draco pairing. Indeed, many of the ones I know of are werewolf fics (see yesterday's rec post). But these are my favorites of the non-werewolf ones I've read so far.
