More interesting questions in terms of the effects of one fest over another! We may have to investigate further :)
For me, I still prefer to read NC-17 fics. But I'm picky, and in general I don't like PWP. I need there to be good plot and characterization too, and it's so important that the sex scenes be, as you said, integral to those. If I'm skimming the sex, it's because the scene doesn't seem to have grown naturally from the plot/characterization, and therefore is less interesting to me. But when an author can make it all work together and still deliver the NC-17 rating, then I'm all in :)
